Are you concerned that your child gets upset when you turn on the vacuum cleaner or garbage disposal? Does your toddler have a “meltdown” during transitions from home to daycare? Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is a condition that causes individuals to have difficulty dealing with the sensory information in their environment.
Our knowledgeable pediatric therapists in Olathe, KS are experts in treating SPD. Give Therapy In Motion a call today to request an appointment for your child.
What is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Sensory processing disorder is a disconnect between the sensory information we take in and the way our brain processes it (perception).
We process sensations all the time. We see, hear, smell, and feel. All of that input has to be filtered and some individuals have difficulty with that. We may overreact to the sensations. We may have a muted reaction.
We all process sensory information differently, and it only becomes problematic if our sensory processing interferes with everyday life activities. If your child is struggling, pediatric therapy at our clinic may help.
Here are some examples of sensory processing disorder:
- Hiding from sensations that are overwhelming
- Rocking body to calm and organize
- Screaming during transitions
- Refusal to eat certain food textures
- Covering ears from unpleasant sounds
How is SPD Treated?
Your child’s pediatric therapist will conduct an evaluation including your child’s medical history and a sensory profile. The information you provide will be key to developing a comprehensive therapy program including interventions that can be done at home.
Here are some common interventions and the sensory systems they address:
- Swinging on bolster or platform swings (vestibular/inner ear)
- Vibration (proprioception/touch)
- Habituation and sensitization to all types of stimuli
- Brushing (touch)
- Joint compression (proprioception)
